Strange / Book Cover + Creative Direction

Summary
We were commissioned to design the cover for Strange: A Study in Anomalies, a book that investigates the nature of the unfamiliar. Our goal was to capture its unsettling, thought-provoking essence through stark visuals and symbolic abstraction. The final piece sets the tone for a narrative rooted in curiosity and the beautifully bizarre.

Overview

The cover features two loosely formed figures, created using a chaotic mesh of hand-drawn lines. Their distorted symmetry and uncanny gaze mirror the book’s exploration of things that defy classification. We used negative space and irregular type treatment to emphasize tension and ambiguity.

Project Thinking

Rather than illustrating specific anomalies, we chose to express the feeling of encountering one. The visual language was intentionally abstract—more suggestive than descriptive—to leave space for interpretation. Our aim was to evoke a visceral response before a single page is turned.

Aproach

The design leans into raw, organic textures to mirror the unpredictability of the subject matter. Every visual element was selected to disturb balance—wiggly lines, misaligned typography, and deliberate spatial discomfort. It’s a cover that doesn’t explain—it invites investigation.
